The Type 61 was the main battle tank (MBT / CCP) designed, developed and built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Japan Self-Defense Ground Force. Its development begins in 1955 and the first pre-production vehicle is exhibited in April 1961, year of which takes its name as is customary in the military name of Japan in its armament and military vehicles. A total of 560 Type 61 was manufactured between 1961 and 1975, when its production ceased1 to give way to the development of Type 74.
