Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB MN625 / MR-B, RAF No.245 Squadron, Holmsley South Aerodrome, Hampshire, June 1944, 1:72, Corgi
If the Douglas C-47 Skytrain is considered the most famous multi-engine aircraft of D-Day air operations, then the equivalent of a single engine must be the fearsome Hawker Typhoon. Agile and extremely armed, the Typhoon witnessed much action during the summer of 1944, either attacking strategic objectives in the weeks leading up to the invasion, such as German radar sites, or providing aerial support to ground units in the heads from the beach With advanced air controllers installed with ground units throughout Normandy, the RAF Typhoons were ready to respond to any request for air support, and aircraft that had not yet carried out attack missions off the coast of northern France, ready to be put into action. These missions proved to be incredibly dangerous for the Typhoon crews, not so much for the Luftwaffe fighters, but for the anti-aircraft fire fired from every German weapon in Normandy. In fact, in the weeks after the D-Day landings, more than 500 Typhoons had been lost, less than 10% of which were attributed to the attack of the enemy fighter. Flying at high speed and at an extremely low level, the opinion shared by the Typhoon crews was that you had not experienced a real combat flight until you had spent time in a Typhoon squadron.
