BF 109E-3 1./JG 2 "Richthofen", Luftwaffe Oblt. Otto Bertram, May, 1940, 1:48, Hobby Master
Bertram joined the Condor Legion in March 1938 supporting the national side in the Spanish Civil War. During the course of the war, the second lieutenant Bertram, with nine victories in 1./J 88, became one of the most successful fighter pilots in that conflict. On October 4, 1938, he was shot down by a Republican I-15. After being rescued he was made a prisoner of war. For his achievements in Spain he was granted the Spanish Gold Cross with Diamonds. The Bf-209E-3 "White 1" plane, piloted by Otto Bertram with the 1./JG 2 "Richtofen" claimed his first victory on April 20, 1940. Three of his four victories at the Battle of France arrived in May 1940. In October 1940, Bertram was named Hauptmann in III./JG 2 and received the Knight's Cross. He was retired from active duty because his two brothers had died in action and the status of "last child" was applied.
