Dewoitine D.520, pilot Marcel Albert, 1941, 1:72, Atlas
Marcel Albert was a French World War II ace that flew for the air forces of the Vichy government, the French free forces, the Soviet Air Force and the Royal Air Force. In February 1940 Albert was assigned to the Groupe de Chasse I / 3, a unit that operates the best fighter in France, the Dewoitine D.520. When the German troops invaded France in May 1940, their squadron was transferred to the Reims airfield. On May 14, 1940, Albert shot down a Do 17 bomber and, later that day, a Messerschmitt Me 109 fighter, although this victory was not confirmed. He also obtained a probable victory over a Heinkel He 111 bomber before the armistice.
Under the Vichy government, his squadron was redistributed to Algeria where Albert flew some missions against the British forces in Gibraltar. On October 14 he and two other pilots defected and delivered their planes to the British.
Having arrived in England, Albert joined the RAF and flew 47 missions in Spitfires with the 340 Squadron.
At the end of 1942, Albert joined the group of fighters Normandie, a unit of free French fighters that were sent to the Soviet Union to help fight the Germans. The Normandie group entered the fight in April 1943, flying Russian-made Yak-1 fighters and later Yak-9s and Yak-3s. Albert quickly proved to be one of the best pilots in Normandie. His first enemy was eliminated with a Focke-Wulf Fw-189 on June 16, 1943. In July, he claimed 3 more, and received command of the 1st squad on September 4, 1943. During the offensive against East Prussia in October 1944 scored 7 victories.
His total score was 23 victories (including 15 shared) in 262 combat missions, which made him the second highest rated French ace in World War II. On November 27, 1944 he received the highest decoration of the Soviet Union, the Golden Star and the title of "Hero of the Soviet Union", a prize almost never granted to foreigners.
