Henschel HS 123A, Unit 3 / SFGR 50, pilot Lt. Hamann, 1:72, Oxford
The Henschel Hs 123A was a single seat biplane bomber; Close support attack aircraft, developed and built by Henschel, a company that was previously engaged in the construction of railway locomotives. He designed and built the aircraft after Hitler came to power in 1935 and the subsequent formation of the Luftwaffe. The first HS123 took off in 1936 and was flown by the German Luftwaffe in the Spanish Civil War. He also saw the service during the early stages of World War II but proved inadequate compared to rival planes.
Lieutenant Kurt Hamann, the pilot of this particular Henschel 123A was not fully trained but was desperate to fly. He was the squad's assistant, essentially an office job, but being friends with the pilots, he was given unofficial lessons. The plane was used for training but, with just one seat, I always had to climb alone. His comrades were responsible for all the German graffiti printed on the plane, which are quite ironic. All training was worth it and he became a Luftwaffe pilot with all of the law, even flying Stukas in the Battle of France. Unfortunately he was shot down and killed by Allied planes during one of his missions.
The Oxford replica relives Lieutenant Hamann's training days during 1939 and appears in gray, brown and green camouflage, with the pale gray and white underside. Less serious graffiti are printed in white, including Lt Hamann Vorsicht - Lt Hamann Caution (or Look Out!); Gott erhalte uns den Adjutant - "God save the helper" to name just two. The model departs from serious warplanes, but shows a lighter side of both men and machines before the storm, in the days immediately before the conflict.
