Submarine U-26, Germany, World War II, 1: 350, Editions Atlas
The U-26 was one of the two Type IA ocean submarines produced by the Kriegsmarine. Built in Bremen, the U-26 was put into service in May 1936. It had a short but successful career, sinking eleven ships.
Until 1940, the U-26 was used mainly as a training vessel and for propaganda purposes by the German government. During their tests it was discovered that the Type IA submarine was difficult to handle due to its low stability and low diving speed.
In the early 1940s, he was called into combat due to the shortage of available submarines. The U-26 participated in six war patrols, sinking eleven ships and seriously damaging each other. On his first patrol, laying mines, the U-26 sank three merchant ships and damaged a British warship. In his second war patrol he became the first submarine of the Second World War to enter the Mediterranean Sea. The U-26 participated in three other patrols, sinking four merchant ships.
