Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger Ausf. E, Germany, 1942/45, 1:72, Atlas Editions
The last official German designation of this tank was Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. E (Tiger variant armored fighting vehicle), often abbreviated as Tiger. The nickname of the tank was put by Ferdinand Porsche and the Roman number was added after the Tiger II went into production. The first official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. H, but the name was changed in March 1943 to Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E. The designation of the inventory of German military vehicles for this tank was Sd.Kfz. 181
The Tiger was the answer to the unexpected and formidable armored force of the Soviet Union found in the first months of Operation Barbarossa, particularly in the T-34 and KV-1, but recent studies and detailed documentation, put the project as a countermeasure towards the British heavy tanks and the anti-tank guns during the Battle of France, logically in Operation Barbarossa the problems of fighting the Soviet tanks accelerated the project. 1347 units were manufactured.
