Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat, White 2 of VMF-223, pilot Marion Eugene Carl, United States Marine Corps, Guadalcanal, September, 1942, 1:48, Hobby Mster
At the beginning of the Pacific War, in World War II, the Grumman F4F Wildcat was the best fighter plane in the United States. The folding wings of Wildcat allowed to transport a greater number of aircraft but added extra weight which reduced the autonomy of the aircraft. New features such as self-sealing fuel tanks and thicker armor allowed a win ratio of 6.9 to 1.
Originally assigned to VMF-221, Marion Eugene Carl won his first victory on June 4, 1942 during the midway battle. After resting in Hawaii, Carl was re-assigned to VMF-223 "Bulldogs." On August 20, 1942, VMF-223 was deployed in Guadalcanal, where it was demolished on September 9, 1942 and disappeared for 5 days before returning. Marion Carl was the first Marine in the United States to become Ace with 3 wins. Carl ended the war with 18.5 victories, the seventh ace of the United States Marine Corps.
