The Patrol Squadron 45 has a long and distinguished history. After the terrorist attacks in September 2001, the VP-45 conducted long-range reconnaissance missions along the east coast of the USA. UU in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Pelícans were awarded the Arleigh Burke Trophy and the CNO Personal Excellence Award in 2001. The squadron departed for a deployment in Puerto Rico / Keflavik in February 2002 and also operated from several detachment locations. To date, the squadron has registered more than 234,000 flight hours without setbacks.
The P-3C Orion was originally designed as a ground-based, long-range anti-submarine warfare patrol aircraft (ASW). But, the P-3C mission evolved in the late 1990s and early 21st century to include surveillance of the battle space, either at sea or on land. Its long range has proved to be very valuable assets during Operation Iraqi Freedom, as it can see the battle space and instantaneously provide that information to ground troops, especially US Marines.
