Armored Ship Deutschland, Kriegsmarine, 1933, 1: 1250, DeAgostini
Spanish Civil War.- After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 the Deutschland was deployed in the Spanish coasts since July 23 to carry out patrols of non-intervention against the coasts of the Republican zone. During this deployment their main turrets were painted with large black, red and white lines to facilitate their identification from the air as a neutral vessel. His duties included evacuating refugees fleeing the fighting, protecting German ships carrying supplies for the insurgents and intelligence work for the Francoist side.
In May 1937 the Deutschland was moored in the port of Palma de Mallorca, along with other neutral warships of the British and Italian navies. The port was attacked by republican airplanes, although the antiaircraft fire scattered them. The torpedo boats Seeadler and Albatross escorted the Deutschland to the port of Ibiza on May 24 and, when there was anchored, was attacked again by aircraft of the Republican side, a pair of Soviet bombers SB-2 piloted by members of the Air Force Soviet Two bombs hit him: the first penetrated the upper deck, near the bridge, and exploded on the main armored deck, while the second fell near the third 150-mm starboard turret and caused several fires under the decks. The attack killed 31 German crew members and injured 74.
The Deutschland quickly lifted anchors and set sail. He met with Admiral Scheer to board more doctors before sailing to Gibraltar, where the deceased were buried with all military honors. However, ten days later Hitler ordered that all be exhumed and transferred to be buried in Germany. The injured were evacuated to Gibraltar to receive treatment. Hitler, furious at the attack, ordered Admiral Scheer to bombard the port of the republican city of Almeria in retaliation for the so-called "Deutschland Incident." Stalin, for his part, strictly prohibited attacks on German and Italian ships.
Most of 1938 and 1939 were used by the Deutschland in training maneuvers with the rest of the fleet and in several visits of good will to foreign ports, among which was included a trip to Spain after the victory of Francisco Franco in the War Civil. He also participated in large fleet exercises in the Atlantic along with his twin Admiral Graf Spee, the light cruisers Köln, Leipzig and Nürnberg, various destroyers, U-boats and support ships.
