Consolidated B-24H Liberator "Male Call" 453rd BG, US Eighth Air Force, Jimmy Stewart, 1944, 1:72, Corgi
Overshadowed by both the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and later by the Superfortress B-29, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator was the third of the heavy bombers in the United States used during World War II and has the distinction of being the four-engine bomber most produced in the history of aviation. The Liberator served in all theaters of operations during World War II, formed the backbone of the allied daytime bombing offensive against Germany and with its wing mounted on the shoulder, highly efficient, deep fuselage and H-shaped tail unit , the impressive range of the Liberator also helped to close the "breach of the Atlantic" in the vital maritime battle against the German submarines that threatened the supply lines of Great Britain.
Like many others of the 18,500 B-24 produced during World War II, Liberator 42-52154 'Male Call' was an extremely hard-working machine, surviving the war after having completed 95 impressive bombing missions: it is believed that She was the only survivor of the 61 original aircraft assigned to the 453rd Bombing Group that arrived at the RAF Old Buckford on January 21, 1944. The plane was one of the Liberators in which the famous actor James' Jimmy flew 'Stewart as Operations Officer of the 453rd Bombing Group at the Norfolk Airfield.
