Battleship Schlesien, Kaiserliche Marine, 1908, 1: 1250, DeAgostini
The SMS Schlesien was one of the five pre-dreadnought battleships of the Deutschland class built for the German Imperial Navy. The boats of this class were obsolete at the time of their entry into service for their inferiority in size, armor, firepower and speed with respect to the new post-dreadnought battleships.
The Schlesien was assigned to the 1st Battle Squadron of the High Seas Fleet, where he served the first two years of the First World War. He was present at the Battle of Jutland in which he actively participated. After this combat it was relegated to tasks of guard and later dismissed at the end of 1917, when it became school ship.
The Treaty of Versailles only allowed Germany to maintain eight obsolete battleships to defend the German coasts. He was very active in the reorganized Reichsmarine, because in the 20s and 30s the ship was rebuilt and then returned to ship school functions. In the Second World War the Schlesien hardly entered into combat, although it participated in the invasion of Norway and Denmark. After this he returned to secondary duties, and ended his career as an anti-aircraft vessel in the Baltic Sea.
In April 1945 the Schlesien sailed for Swinemünde to replenish its ammunition and evacuate wounded soldiers when it touched a marine mine. It sank in shallow water and much of its superstructure, including the main battery, remained above the surface of the water. In the remaining months of the war, Schlesien was able to use his heavy artillery to support retreating German Army troops.
