Battleship Schleswig-Holstein, Kriegsmarine, 1908, 1: 1250, DeAgostini
SMS Schleswig-Holstein was one of the five battleships of the Deutschland class and the last pre-Dreadnought battleship built by the German Imperial Navy. The ship was put in step at Germaniawerft shipyards in Kiel in August 1905 and entered service in July 1908. Ships of this class were obsolete at the time of their entry into service because of their inferiority in size, armoring, power fire and speed with respect to the new Dreadnought type battleships already in service in the British Navy.
The battleship came into action in the two world wars. During the First World War it was in the first line of combat as part of the 2nd Battle Squadron of the German High Seas Fleet, in which it participated in the greatest naval combat of the entire conflict, the Battle of Jutland. After this battle the battleship was relegated to guard duties at the mouth of the Elbe River before being discharged at the end of 1917.
The Schleswig-Holstein is credited with having fired the first shots of the Second World War, carried out against the Polish base of Westerplatte in the early hours of September 1, 1939. During most of this second world confrontation, the battleship was employed as a ship school, until in December 1944 it was sunk by British bombers.
