Bedford Truck QLR, 1st Infantry Division, United Kingdom, 1943, 1:76, Oxford
At the start of World War II, Bedford was hired by the British War Office to produce a 3-ton 4x4 general service truck. A pilot model was ready in February 1940 and mass production began in March 1941. The Bedford QL was in production from 1941 to 1945 and was the first series of Bedford vehicles built for the British Armed Forces evolving to be used in numerous military activities during the conflict. This new Bedford in 1:76 scale by Oxford Military is based on the QLR variant as a signal vehicle. Originally mounted on the QLC chassis-cabin, a special QLR chassis was soon put into production, with special electrical equipment, radio suppression, assembly of a 660 W auxiliary generator driven by the transfer box power socket and, as the QLT, two 16-gallon fuel tanks instead of one behind the cabin. Interior equipment, partitions and radio equipment varied according to different functions. In the vehicles installed for the wireless function a shop could be erected in the rear. Between the cabin and the main body were lockers for aerial masts and other equipment. Underneath the body were more cabinets and racks for cable drums, batteries, tire chains, 20 gallon drinking water tank, grinding box, tools, auxiliary engine fuel tank, drums and other items. The basic body housings were produced by Duple, Lagonda, Mulliner, Tickford and others. A revised body was introduced in 1944 for the roles of High and Low Power and High Power Wireless Commands. Our solid-looking Bedford QLR is decorated with the dark gray / gray-brown military markings, relieved only by the white and yellow print on the front and side of the cab and on the rear of the vehicle. The model is topped with a spare wheel towards the rear of the roof.
