The Pinguin was a German freighter modified and armed during World War II to combat the naval traffic. Under the denomination of Cruise of Commercial Interference 5 (Handelsstörkreuzer 5, HSK 5) it was used like auxiliary cruise. The British Navy called Raider F al Pinguin. The best known success of the Pinguin was the capture of much of the Norwegian whaling fleet in January 1941 in the Southern Ocean. He managed to get to France, as a prey, the three captured factory-ships, with a large quantity of whale oil. On May 8, 1941, the Pinguin was located in the Seychelles by the heavy cruiser Cornwall. One of the 20.3-cm salvos reached the mines on board, the Pinguin jumping through the air. Only 60 crew members and 22 prisoners survived, killing 342 crew members and 203 prisoners. With a total of 145,674 GRT sunk or captured, the Pinguin was the most successful auxiliary cruiser of both world wars.

Returns
