Heavy Cruiser SMS Blücher, Kaiserliche Marine, 1910, 1: 1250, DeAgostini
The SMS Blücher was the last armored cruiser built by the German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine). Its design sought to adapt to the characteristics that the German intelligence incorrectly believed were the specifications of British Invincible class battlecruisers. The Blücher was larger than the previous armored cruisers and carried heavier armaments, but it did not match the size and artillery of the battlecruisers that replaced the battleships in the British and German armies. The ship was named after Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, commander of the Prussian army who confronted and defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
He served in the First Exploration Group of the Imperial Navy for most of his career, including the first part of the First World War. He took part in the episode of the bombing of the English coastal towns of Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby, and in the attack on Great Yarmouth, in 1914. In the Battle of the Dogger Bank, the Blücher was hit by projectiles from the British battlecruisers and the damages received significantly reduced their speed. Admiral Franz von Hipper, commander of the German squadron, decided to leave the Blücher at the mercy of the ships pursuing them in order to keep their most valuable ships.
