Battleship Bismarck, Kriegsmarine, 1939, 1: 1250, DeAgostini
The Bismarck was the first of the two battleships of the Bismarck class of the German navy, the Kriegsmarine, during World War II. Named in honor of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, promoter of German unification.
The Bismarck was only in service for eight months and participated in a single offensive operation, it had the mission of breaking into the Atlantic Ocean along with the Prinz Eugen heavy cruiser and attacking the Allied navigation between the United States and Britain.
The encounter of the enemy ships took place in the battle of the Strait of Denmark, in which the Bismarck sank the battle cruiser HMS Hood, pride of the British Royal Navy, and caused significant damage to the new battleship HMS Prince of Wales. On the other hand, the Bismarck received the impacts of three British projectiles and suffered a significant loss of fuel.
While sailing to the coast of occupied France, the Bismarck was attacked by torpedo aircraft Fairey Swordfish of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. A torpedo shattered one of the rudders of the German battleship, which made it impossible to maneuver. The next morning, the immobilized Bismarck was attacked and neutralized by the intense fire of several British ships, after which his crew plunged him and sank with great loss of life. The exact cause of its collapse has been a matter of debate among experts.
