Transatlantic RMS Lusitania, Great Britain, 1906, 1: 1250, Atlas
The RMS Lusitania was a British liner designed by Leonard Peskett and built at the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland. The ship entered the passenger service with the Cunard Line on August 26, 1907. It was called Lusitania in honor of the old Roman province of the same name. It was the largest ship in the world next to the RMS Mauretania, until the rival company White Star Line launched the RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic, in 1911 and 1912, respectively. During the First World War, and during the submarine war of Germany to the Kingdom Joined, the ship was identified and torpedoed by the German U-Boot U-20 on May 7, 1915, sinking in only eighteen minutes. Disappeared about 18 km off Cape Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, a tragedy that killed 1198 people of the 1959 who were on board. The tragedy shocked the world and put public opinion against Germany, contributing to the entry of the United States into the First World War and becoming for the allies of the Triple Entente an iconic symbol of recruitment and why I was fighting.
