Messerschmitt ME 262 A-1A, pilot Heinrich Bar, 1945, 1:72, Atlas
Heinrich "Pritzl" Bär (25 May 1913-28 April 1957) was an ace of the German Luftwaffe who served throughout the Second World War in Europe. Bär flew more than a thousand combat missions and fought in the western, eastern and Mediterranean theaters. On 18 occasions he survived being shot down, and according to the records in the German Federal Archives, he claimed to have shot down 228 enemy planes. He was credited with 208 air victories, of which 16 were piloting a Messerschmitt Me- 262.
Bär joined the Reichswehr in 1934 and was transferred to the Luftwaffe in 1935. He first served as a mechanic, then as a pilot on a transport plane while informally trained as a fighter pilot. He claimed his first aerial victory in September 1939 on the French border. At the end of the Battle of England, his victory count had increased to 17. Transferred to the Eastern Front to participate in Operation Barbarossa, he quickly accumulated more victories, a feat that earned him, in February 1942, the Cruz de la Cruz de Iron with Oak Leaves and Swords for 90 victories.
During the rest of the Second World War, Bär was credited with another 130 aerial victories, including 16 during the flight of one of the first fighter aircraft, the Me 262, an achievement that would normally have earned him the coveted Cruz de la Cruz Iron with Oak Leaves, swords and diamonds. Hermann Göring's personal dislike of Bär, together with the insubordinate character and the lack of military discipline, deprived him of this prize. After the Second World War, Bär continued his career as an aviator. He died in a plane crash on April 28, 1957 near Braunschweig.
