Supermarine Walrus N19, Irish Air Corps, 1:72, Oxford
Three Walrus, the N18 (L2301), N19 (L2302) and N20 (L2303) were to be delivered on March 3, 1939 to be used by the Irish Air Corps as a maritime patrol aircraft during the Irish World War II Emergency. They were scheduled to fly from Southampton to Baldonnel Aerodrome, Ireland. The N.19 made the trip successfully, the N.20 had to be diverted to Milford Haven and the N.18 and its two crew members were forced to land on the high seas causing serious damage to the hull. With the help of the nearby Rosslare Harbor lifeboat and a local fishing boat, the N18 was towed to a jetty and then to the Baldonnel Airfield, where it was repaired.
The Casement airfield in Baldonnel was and continues to be the base of the Irish Air Corps, which comprises the air section of the Irish Defense Force. It was established in 1924 and in the period before World War II, the Corps received several British planes, from Gloster Gladiators to Avro Ansons and Westland Lysanders as well as the three Supermarine Walrus.
This model represents the Walrus N19 that arrived at the air base in one piece. Decorated in silver with the orange, white and green striped Irish stripes on the wings and tail; the detail includes a green cabin and black instrument panels. Even the catwalks on the upper wings reproduce as a series of black 'footprints'. Its N19 numbering is printed in black on both sides of the fuselage.
