The Tiger-Mörser, 38 cm RW61 auf Sturm (panzer) mörser Tiger, or Sturmmörser Tiger, better known as Sturmtiger or Sturmpanzer VI, was a German assault cannon from World War II, built from the Tiger I chassis and armed with a naval mortar, the SturmMörser RW61 L / 5,4 of 380 mm. Their main task was to provide fire support to the infantry troops in the urban fighting. Only 18 units were manufactured, from damaged Tiger tanks.
The idea of manufacturing a heavy vehicle, capable of tearing down heavily defended buildings or areas fortified with a shot arose after the experiences of the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942. At that time, the Wehrmacht only had the Sturminfanteriegeschütz 33, a variant of the StuG III armed with a heavy 150 mm cannon. Twelve of them were lost in the fight for Stalingrad.
His successor, the Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär went into production in early 1943, but the Wehrmacht was still looking for a similar vehicle, but much more armored. Therefore, the decision was made to create a new vehicle based on the Tiger tank and armed with a 210 mm howitzer.
However, this weapon was not available at that time and was replaced by a 380 mm rocket launcher mortar, which had been adapted from a Kriegsmarine depth launcher.
The first prototype was ready and was presented to Hitler in October 1943. The production was approved in April 1944, after intense testing. Between August and December, 18 Sturmtiger were completed. Production was slow, partly because the Sturmtiger were built from damaged or removed Tiger tanks from the battlefield instead of new vehicles.
