The USS Archerfish (SS / AGSS-311) was a Balao-class submarine. It was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named as "Archerfish". He is famous for having sunk the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano in November 1944, the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine. For this achievement he received a "Presidential Unit Citation" after the Second World War. The keel of the Archerfish was placed in January 1943 and launched in May of the same year. The submarine was put into service on September 4, 1943 under the command of Lieutenant Commander George W. Kehl.
