Submarine U47, Germany, World War II, 1: 350, Editions Atlas
The U 47 was a German submarine of the type VII B during World War II, famous for being commanded by the corvette captain Günther Prien, ace of the fleet of submersibles of the Kriegsmarine and one of the biggest hunters of ships during the Battle of the Atlantic.
The U-Boot 47 was always destined for the 7th Combat Fleet and during the Second World War it carried 12 patrols in which it sank a total of thirty ships that totaled 162,769 tons of tonnage, although its most important feat was the sinking of the battleship British HMS Royal Oak within the naval base of Scapa Flow in the early hours of October 14, 1939. During its campaigns also broke down another 8 vessels with a total of 62,751 tons.
The U 47 disappeared during the night of 7 to 8 March 1941 while operating against the OB 293 convoy in the Atlantic Ocean. The official version supposed that the submersible had fallen under the depth charges of the British destroyer HMS Wolverine, although later investigations believe that it could really be destroyed by the combined attack of the English corvettes HMS Camellia and HMS Arbutus.
