The Wilhelm Gustloff was a German liner built at the Blohm & Voss shipyard. It entered service in 1938 during the period of Nazi Germany in time of peace. In the Second World War it served as a mother ship for submarines, hospital ship and evacuation transport during Operation Hannibal towards the end of the war. On January 30, 1945 it was torpedoed by the Soviet submarine S-13 under the command of Aleksandr Marinesko. , sinking with 9,343 people on board. It has been the greatest maritime tragedy in history.
