Destroyer Z16 Friedrich Eckoldt, Kriegsmarine, 1938, 1: 1250, DeAgostini
Z16 Friedrich Eckoldt was a 1934 class destroyer built for the Kriegsmarine.
It was named in honor of Captain Friedrich Eckoldt, the commander of the torpedo ship V 48, who died when his ship was sunk during the Battle of Jutland on May 31, 1916.
At the beginning of World War II, the ship was initially deployed to block the Polish coast, but was quickly transferred to German Bay to deposit underwater minefields. At the end of 1939 and 1940, its mines sank 21 merchant ships.
Eckoldt participated in the early stages of the Norwegian Campaign transporting troops to the Trondheim area. The ship was transferred to France later in the year.
Eckoldt returned to Germany in the late 1940s for a repair and was transferred to Norway as part of the preparations for Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. The ship spent some time at the beginning of the campaign conducting anti-aircraft patrols in Soviet waters.
After sinking the HMS Bramble, Eckoldt confused the British light cruiser HMS Sheffield with the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper and was taken completely by surprise when the cruiser opened fire. The ship sank without returning the fire.
